"Brandalism":  Any advertisement in public space that gives you no choice whether you see it.

This term, coined by Banksy, gives agency to all of us who feel a rising tide of anti-consumerism.  He goes on to encourage us to respond actively to brandalism.  It's yours to take, he maintains, to rearrange and reuse.  Asking for permission to do so is like asking to keep a rock someone just threw at your head.  [The companies] have rearranged the world to put themselves in front of you.  They never asked for your permission, don't even start asking for theirs.

Whoever defaced the billboard had a tremendous amount of fun doing so.  They don't take themselves seriously.  They don't seek personal recognition.  They are pointing out the smoke and mirrors of public advertising and saying don't take this BS lying down.  We don't, and you don't have to either.  Can't wait for Round Two:)

Babeldown Clown was selected for "The Real Deal--New Old Masters", an invitational show hosted by Court House Cultural Center, Stuart, FL, March-April 2025.
